Have you ever heard people talk too much? Or someone who likes to talk about himself in detail, even the small things in life. Maybe some will also include many other names in the story that we ourselves do not know? If so, what you felt at that time? Bored, irritated and sometimes we expect the conversation will just end. If possible we choose to leave him/ her. The fact shows that a woman uses about 20.000 words per day while a man uses about 7.000Ā words! It means we spend a lot of time in our life just to talk. Sure it can be a good thing if we always speak blessing. But be careful! It can also be a bad thing if we do not control our tongue and constantly speak useless words.
One day, on Sunday, my friend and I came to visit a church. After participated in worship there, we took the time to had lunch. Not far from the church, there is a “food court” where the food vendors have lined up with their carts. After ordered ice tea and meatballs, we sat among the other buyers. They were talking and of course, my friend and I could hear their conversation because we were among them. I was surprised when I heard they were cursing some of their friends. They underestimated their friends and sometimes laughed and mocked them. I felt uncomfortable sit among them. Suddenly, one of them yelled so loud to the seller because her food has not come yet, she cursed him and got mad. My partner and I just looked at each other. It was uncomfortable to sit in between them. More distressing when we know they are members of the local church.
You may also find many similar situations. We often find Christians who act like that. People who claim to worship as a Christian but does not curb his tongue. They forget their identity as children of God who should be a witness for the glory of his Father in heaven and not defame him.
If anyone thinks he is religiousĀ and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’sĀ religion is worthless.Ā James 1:26
Hm … do you remember what usually doctors do at first when examining a patient? A doctor will ask the patient to open his mouth, right?. Because by looking at the tongue, a doctor can tell a lot about the patient’s condition. People can see the quality of our life as Christians through the words that we speak. We need to be careful with our words. We are the sons of God, and that means we should be able to maintain the good testimony of our Father? Therefore, learn to watch our words. Use your tongue to glorify God. Remember, there are so many people who acknowledge us as a Christian. Watch your tongue and speak bless not curse.
Now, we must choose. Do we want to be witnesses of God and glorify Him by taking care of our words or not?
